Recovering armchair cushions (Ercol armchair)

I have an Ercol upright armchair and the cushions (back, seat and arms) need recovering. The current material is woollen and I am using a heavy cotton as a replacement. Obviously the woollen material has a bit of 'give' in it as opposed to the cotton which doesn't. The back cushion has buttons at both front and back. I have thought about unpicking the covers and using these as a pattern but am a bit wary about making a big mistake by taking them all to bits! I'm not sure how to remove the buttons as these are held in place through front to back with I don't know what. Can anyone give me their advice on what to do, or should I leave well alone and keep the chair as it is! Many thanks.
